My retreat from the post-Amazon-apocalypse-GoodReads. My shelves and my reviews, I hope, will find a safe haven here.
I like to read epic fantasy (the bigger, thicker and longer, the better) and science fiction (perfer space operas). I also enjoy the occasional biography or history non-fiction.
Out in the real world, I'm an IT professional in the Legal industry. Tech doesn't scare me or phase me.
First full day of Fall here in Kansas. And in the grandest tradition of the Bleeding Kansas (see 'Ad Astra Per Aspera' ... Latin for 'To the stars through difficulties'), I'm taking my first steps to abandoning my account at GoodReads. My reviews must 'live free.' This hinges on the import of my books, reviews and shelves, of course, which may take many hours (even days) to complete.
The straw the broke the camel's proverbial back came late last Friday, when GoodReads announced a Terms of Service change to their review policy and began deleting reviews without notice to said readers/reviewers. Follow this link for the announcement and the heated, but obviously ignored, feedback that resulted: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1499741?order=a&page=1
I immediately updated my 'On Amazon Acquiring GoodReads' blog post at my own blog, where I've been slowly relocating my reviews since the original announcement last Spring.
I love to read, and I loved the discussion groups at GoodReads and all the friends I've acquired over the past five years. I will not be able to completely abandon GoodReads, as I am a moderator on a few groups that I do not wish to leave behind. Yet I hope to find new friends here, at BookLikes, and a safe haven from the Amazon Thought Police.
