Autumn Adventures

My retreat from the post-Amazon-apocalypse-GoodReads. My shelves and my reviews, I hope, will find a safe haven here.

I like to read epic fantasy (the bigger, thicker and longer, the better) and science fiction (perfer space operas).  I also enjoy the occasional biography or history non-fiction.

Out in the real world, I'm an IT professional in the Legal industry.  Tech doesn't scare me or phase me.

The Art of Racing in the Rain - Garth Stein 3.5 stars (but I rounded up because a) I love dogs and b) I love road racing). I read this novel in record time, I suspect because the hardcover edition was smaller than normal and the line and page spacing included more white space than the dense epic volumes I frequently peruse. I loved all the dog bits and the racing bits, but I disliked the messy dysfunctional family bits. Probably explains why I read very little contemporary fiction - it all cuts too close to the truth. Almost real people behaving badly and believably badly. Can't we all just get along! The story definitely pulled the heart strings and got my blood boiling several times, so the author managed to connect to my emotional buttons; if that was his goal, he succeeded. I'm probably being generous giving this novel four stars, but I can't help myself: a dog and his road race driving owner
